Ultimate Spring Checklist for Boat Owners

Published: May 2, 2025  •  Category: Personal Insurance

For boat owners, spring is the time to trade your landlocked routine for life vests and the freedom of open water. Before you launch, make sure your vessel and your insurance are ready for another season on Florida’s lakes and coastal waterways.

Mechanical and Safety Checklist

  • Engine inspection: Change the oil, check belts and hoses, flush the cooling system, and test the battery. Have a certified marine mechanic inspect if the boat has been in storage for more than six months.
  • Fuel system: Inspect fuel lines and fittings for cracks or corrosion. Check for water in the fuel tank.
  • Bilge pump: Test the automatic and manual functions. A working bilge pump is critical in Florida’s afternoon storm season.
  • Navigation lights: Replace any burned-out bulbs before your first night run.
  • Fire extinguishers: Check the charge gauge and replace any extinguishers past their expiration date. U.S. Coast Guard regulations require them on most vessels.
  • Life jackets: Ensure you have a Coast Guard-approved PFD for every person on board. Inspect for tears, mold, or deteriorated foam.
  • Emergency flares: Check expiration dates and replace as needed.

Hull and Trailer Inspection

  • Inspect the hull for stress cracks, osmotic blistering, or impact damage
  • Check all through-hull fittings and sea cocks for leaks
  • Inspect trailer lights, tires (including spare), wheel bearings, and safety chains
  • Verify trailer registration and boat registration are current

Review Your Boat Insurance

Before you hit the water, review your boat insurance policy. Many owners are underinsured — often carrying only liability coverage when agreed-value hull insurance provides far better protection in the event of a total loss.

Key coverage areas to review:

  • Agreed value vs. actual cash value: Agreed value pays the full insured amount in a total loss. Actual cash value deducts for depreciation.
  • Liability limits: At least $300,000 in liability coverage is recommended for most recreational vessels.
  • Uninsured boater coverage: Protects you if you are hit by an uninsured vessel.
  • Hurricane haul-out coverage: Essential for Florida boat owners — covers the cost of hauling your boat ahead of a named storm.
  • Towing and assistance: On-water towing can cost $500 or more without coverage.
